Volunteers

Volunteers

Without the tireless dedication of our volunteers, the festival simply couldn’t take place. With around 80 members, we now have a wonderful group of enthusiastic people who help us with various tasks, such as catering, ticket collection, venue supervision, technical support, the information desk, and so on. Do you feel the drive to help us too? Then send an email to: info@puppetinternational.nl.

As a thank you for their efforts, volunteers receive free tickets to performances, depending on the number of hours they have volunteered.

We can’t do it on our own

Of course, you can’t organise a festival like Puppet International on your own; that would be impossible, and we wouldn’t want to anyway.

First and foremost, we’d like to thank all our volunteers for their hard work both on and behind the scenes at Puppet International. You’re the ones who make the festival what it is. We would like to thank the friends of Puppet International for their financial contribution to the festival. To the residents who are making their bedrooms available to accommodate the performers: you are showing just how hospitable Meppel is. And to all the venues throughout Meppel and their staff who are making this festival possible. We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Schouwburg Ogterop and all its staff; as well as providing technical support and handling ticket sales, Schouwburg Ogterop is also a key partner in the preparations for Puppet International.

We would also like to thank all our sponsors, Kunst & Cultuur Drenthe, Productiehuis Valentijn Noordkust, Cultuurklik, Filmhuis Meppel, Nederlandse Vereniging voor Poppenspelers, Haags Theaterhuis, the staff of the municipality of Meppel, Stichting Merk Meppel and everyone else who has helped to make this possible once again.

Mission

Mission

More puppet theatre in the Netherlands. Puppet International’s aim is to engage audiences in an appealing and contemporary way, introducing them to puppet and object theatre and its unique form of performance. There is not much left of puppet and object theatre in the Netherlands. Abroad, however, this form of theatre is held in high regard. It draws full houses on the mainstream circuit. In the Netherlands, it is rarely seen in theatres. The festival introduces artists and visitors of all ages to this form of theatre. This five-day festival offers something for everyone, both in terms of education and entertainment, to discover puppet and object theatre.

Bringing stories and events to life, creating beautiful imagery with puppets and objects, and breathing life into inanimate objects evoke a magical atmosphere that no other form of theatre can capture in such a unique way. The audience forms a direct connection with the object. This is why watching puppet and object theatre is often experienced as an intense experience.

The history of Puppet International

The history of Puppet International

In the late 1980s, Meppel was declared the ‘puppetry capital of the north’. The reason for this was that the world-famous puppeteer Henk Boerwinkel and his wife Ans (who performed together under the name ‘Triangel’) and the renowned puppeteer Jan de Noord were all based in Meppel. The Boerwinkels put this form of theatre on the international map and continued for a long time to play a leading role as ‘pioneers’ and innovators on local, regional and national stages.

To mark this designation as a ‘puppetry city’, a stage was set up at the time, offering other puppet and figure theatre groups the opportunity to present their shows to the public. This festival proved so rewarding for both the organisers and the performers that it generated more than enough enthusiasm to ensure that this (originally one-off) festival would continue in the future, for the time being every two years.

After so many years and editions, the festival has undergone a clearly discernible evolution. In recent years, the focus has been primarily on enhancing artistic quality, promoting diversity, reaching a wider audience and increasing attendance figures. Today, Puppet International ranks among the country’s leading performing arts festivals.

In keeping with the principle that ‘standing still is going backwards’, new elements have been added over the years. In addition to the ever-popular Popp-en-Route, these have been expanded to include a variety of new options (such as a children’s route, a cycling route, a Hapas route, an audio route or a themed route). To contribute to the development of the genre, opportunities have been created for young, emerging artists, many of whom have recently graduated. They are given the chance to showcase their work through short performances, thereby gaining experience in the sector. As more and more international festival organisers come to Puppet International, the number of Dutch companies on the cusp of gaining greater international recognition is also growing. Puppet International serves as a gateway to the European market. Nevertheless, the core of the programme will always consist of the most pressing international puppet and object theatre productions of the moment.
Vision

Vision

The festival has now grown to such an extent that, over the course of the five-day event, around 40 companies are in Meppel, staging a total of more than 300 performances. The Ogterop Theatre is one of the festival’s central venues. This is where tickets are sold, exhibitions are held, puppets and other puppetry props are sold, and films related to the festival are screened. The town centre is also becoming increasingly involved in the festival. A large part of the programme now takes place across the whole of Meppel. The town is also deeply involved in the festival. Not only are the performances spread throughout the town, but the artists also stay with friends of the festival scattered across the town centre. The performers eat at various restaurants and cafés throughout the town centre, so you may well hear languages from all over the world during these five days.

The quality of the performances is high, and our audience survey shows that our audience recognises and appreciates this. The artistic director watches all performances in person before they are commissioned. The artistic director is also a puppeteer in her own right who has more than earned her spurs.

Over the years, Puppet International has grown to become the only international puppet and object theatre festival of this calibre and scale in the Netherlands and Flanders. Thanks to its success, the festival relies on motivated and enthusiastic board members, festival staff and a large team of equally motivated and enthusiastic volunteers. Through their many years of dedication, they have gained a wealth of experience and built up considerable expertise. This expertise can be drawn upon time and again, provided the festival can continue to take place at this frequency. We would like to harness the energy that all staff members have gained from the enthusiasm with which they contribute to the festival, in order to motivate potential future staff members and ensure the festival’s long-term future.

Fair Pay

Puppet International operates in a fair and transparent manner, and this also applies to the remuneration it pays to freelancers associated with the organisation and to performers.

The total budget for artists is approximately €120,000 per edition (as of 2024). When including a company in the festival programme, we base our decision on the company’s asking price. We assume that the asking price is related to the artist’s career stage.

For the young creators’ programme (creators in their final year of art school or recent graduates presenting their first full-length performance), we start from a basic rate of €150 per day, excluding VAT and travel expenses, with Puppet International providing accommodation (overnight stays, breakfast, lunch and dinner) and the creator having free access to all festival activities (provided they are not sold out) and to the networking meeting with (international) programmers.

Puppet International offers the following remuneration to its self-employed contractors:

Artistic direction 17.500,- excl. VAT per edition
Financial direction 17.500,- excl. VAT per edition
Publicity and marketing 10.000,- excl. VAT per edition
Festival production 7.500,- excl. VAT per edition
Artistic support 5.000,- excl VAT per edition
Technical production 5.000,- excl VAT per edition
Volunteer coordination 5.000,- excl. VAT per edition
